   *** INSTRUCTIONS FOR TREK ***

OBJECTIVE: You are Captain of the
starship Enterprise and your
mission is to destroy all the
Klingons in the 64 quadrant galaxy.
You must complete the mission in
a specified amount of time. You
will have two or three Starbases
where you can re-supply your ship.

The Galaxy is divided into an
eight by eight quadrant grid with
each quadrant divided into an eight
by eight sector grid. You will be
assigned a random starting position
somewhere in the Galaxy.

When you see the "COMMAND:" prompt,
enter one of the legal commands:
NAV SRS LRS PHA TOR SHE DAM COM or
XXX. If you enter an illegal
command you will get a list. Some
commands require data; if you enter
illegal data that command will be
aborted.

SUMMARY OF COMMANDS:

NAV - Navigation - Use this command
to move around the galaxy and also
move within the quadrant. The first
data prompt is COURSE. Enter a
number between 1 and 9 (which is
equiv. to 1) to specify direction.
Use the following chart:

  4 3 2 Direction 1 is east, 2 is
   \|/ northeast, etc. Fractions
5-E-1 are OK and reduces the
/|\ no. of moves required to
  6 7 8 get to a destination.

The next input is WARP FACTOR. Warp
one is the distance across one
quadrant. Use values less than one
to maneuver within the quadrant.
Each sector is equiv. to warp .125
(warp .5 takes you 4 squares).
If the warp engines are damaged you
can only go to warp .2 until the
damage is repaired. NOTE: If you
move with klingons around they will
fire at you!

SRS - Short Range Scan - This shows
you the contents of the quadrant
and is automaticly done when you
enter a new quadrant. If the screen
ever messes up enter this command.
On the quadrant display, E is you,
Klingons are shown as K, Starbase
is B, and stars are *. You will
also get a status display showing
condition code (RED, YELLOW,
GREEN), Energy and Shield levels,
Torpedoes, Stardate, Klingons and
quadrant/sector numbers.

LRS - Long Range Scan - Gives you
a summary of the surrounding
quadrants. Each is represented by
a three digit number. The first
digit is # of Klingons, the second
is # of starbases, and the third
is # of stars. Example - 207 =
2 Klingons, no bases and 7 stars.

PHA - Phasors - Allows you to
destroy enemy vessles by zapping
them with energy. Enter the TOTAL
amount of energy to be divided up
among the Klingons. It takes from
50 to 200 RECEIVED energy units
to destroy each Klingon. Phasor
effectiveness decreases at longer
distances. After firing you will
get a status report on each Klingon
hit and remaining Klingon energy.
Any Klingons remaining will fire
at you most of their energy.

TOR - Photon Torpedoes - Use these
to destroy a single Klingon. You
must have a clear line-of-sight to
the enemy. Enter a course number
from 1 to 9 to fire. You can use
option 3 from the computer to
calculate the direction. If you
miss you will be subject to the
enemy's full phasor power. Only use
the TOR command when there is only
one klingon in the quadrant!

SHE - Shield Control - Use this to
set your shield energy level. 500
is usually sufficient to protect
you from damage. If you get hit
with more energy than the shields
can absorb you will be heavily
damaged.

DAM - Damage Control - Gives a
report on the condition of each
device. A negative number indicates
damage. After docking with a base
issue this command and technicians
will repair your ship. Most damage
is temporary and 'fixes itself'
over time.

COM - Computer - This command has
six options:
OPTION 1 - Cumulative Galactic
record. Shows a summary of all the
quadrants visited or scanned.
OPTION 2 - Status Report. Shows
number of Klingons, stardates and
starbases remaining in the game.
OPTION 3 - Torpedo Data. Shows the
direction and distance to all enemy
vessles in the quadrant.
OPTION 4 - Starbase Data. Shows the
direction and distance to starbase
in the quadrant.
OPTION 5 - Direction/Distance. Use
to navigate. Enter the starting and
destination coordinates to find out
direction and distance.
OPTION 6 - Map of the Galaxy with
quadrant region names.

XXX - This command terminates the
game in the event you cannot handle
the pressure.

This version of TREK was originally
written by Mike Mayfield in 1972.
After many modifications it was
published in Dave Ahl's Basic
Computer Games book (1978). This
version for ATARI was typed in and
debugged by me, Terry Newton. No
effort was made to include graphics
or other extras, just the game.
After all, the original version was
written for teletype machines!

------- end TREK.DOC ------------------

Those docs are for TREK.BAS, made sometime in the late '80's.
TREKMOD.BAS fixes a couple display glitches and is modified to
prompt for a difficulty level which is used to change a couple
variables that determine Klingon strength and the chance that
they will shoot first when entering a quadrant.
